Dishthi English Competency Building (Dishthi ECB) Courses

Dishthi ECB course offers English as an additional language session preparing students for upgrading their academic success. Our English language course is designed for students who need English language preparation from starting at the beginner level to the advanced level. Learners can start at any level depending on their competency skill test results. Students can expect to progress at different rates based on their level of achievement. This course is tailored for the students based on their individual needs.

English Competency Skill Test

The purpose of the competency skill test is to determine the individual’s skill level and readiness. The competency skill test serves to evaluate different levels of academic preparation. The goal of this test is not simply to achieve high scores, but to identify your skill levels in English and to place you in an appropriate program of study that includes courses that are not above or below your level of preparation, but offers an appropriate challenge and chance at success.

Levels in Dishthi ECB
Foundation Level
  • Understand the main points from short spoken passages. Identify and note personal responses but with some repetition.
  • Ask and answer simple questions and talk about their interests. Use short phrases to express personal responses but uses mainly memorised language.
  • Understand the main points and personal responses in short written texts made up of familiar language in simple sentences. Read independently, selecting simple text.
  • Writes a few short sentences, with support. Express personal responses and write short phrases with understandable spellings.
Level 1 - Developing
  • Understand the difference in the uses of tenses in a range of spoken material .Identify and note the main points and specific details with little repetition.
  • Gives a short prepared talk, expressing opinions and thoughts. Take part in conversations, using a variety of structures and producing more detailed or extended responses.
  • Scan written material for stories or articles of interest and choose books or texts to read independently.
  • Write texts seeking information and opinions using descriptive language and a variety of structures. Apply grammar in new contexts with few mistakes but the meaning is usually clear.
Level 2 - Expanding
  • While listening to familiar and less familiar material, can draw inferences, and need little repetition.
  • Narrate events, tell a story or relate the plot of a book or film and give opinions. Justify opinions and discuss facts, ideas and experiences. use a range of vocabulary, structures and time references and speak confidently, with good pronunciation and intonation. The language is largely accurate, with few mistakes of any significance.
  • Reads for personal interest and for information, consults a range of reference sources where appropriate.
  • Produce formal and informal texts in an appropriate style on familiar topics. Develop the content of what is read, seen or heard. Spelling and grammar are generally accurate. And use reference materials to extend the range of language and improve accuracy.
Level 3 - Bridging
  • Understand the gist of a range of authentic passages in familiar contexts and summarise, report, and explain extracts, orally or in writing.
  • Take part in discussions covering a range of factual and imaginative topics by giving, justifying and seeking personal opinions and ideas in informal and formal situations. Speak fluently, with consistently accurate pronunciation and varied intonation.
  • Summarise, report, and explain extracts, orally or in writing. Develop independent reading by choosing and responding to stories, articles, books and plays based on interest level.
  • Communicate ideas accurately and in an appropriate style over a range of familiar topics, both factual and imaginative and write coherently and accurately.
Advanced
  • Listen and respond to others, including in pairs and groups, shaping meanings through suggestions, comments and questions.
  • Talk in purposeful and imaginative ways to explore ideas and feelings, adapting and varying structure and vocabulary according to purpose, listeners, and content.
  • Clear critical stance develops a coherent interpretation of text(s), drawing on imaginative insights and well supported by reference and wider textual knowledge. sustained critical analysis/evaluation of the text shows appreciation of how it relates to context and tradition and explores the meanings produced from it.
  • Sentence structure is imaginative, precise and accurate, matched to writer’s purpose and intended effect on the reader. Uses a wide ranging vocabulary imaginatively and with precision.
How can Dishthi ECB help students in different levels?
  • In Dishthi ECB course the learners who take up the beginner and level 1 course will be helped to build their academic language skills. They will be mainstreamed into their normal classes helping them do well in all subjects.
  • The learners who are placed in level 2 will be helped to improve their language skills and will be helped to reach the next level and thus will be able to excel in their communication skills.
  • The learners who are at level 3 will be guided to improve their English proficiency and guide them in creative writing .They also will be trained to attempt competitive exams and ample opportunities will be provided to take part in different literary competitions and to publish their creative work.
  • In the advanced level the students will be helped to excel in their language skills. They will be trained to attempt international exams preparing them to apply for international universities. It will also help to develop real and well-rounded English i.e. you will be prepared for more than basic conversational English.
